What to do:

Million Dollar Fish Season 7

1 October 2021 -  31 March 2022

Famous for barramundi, the Northern Territory is widely known as Australia’s top fishing destination. The Million Dollar Fish competition started in 2015 to encourage visitation and to give one lucky fisho the chance to reel in a million bucks. Now a staple on the Top End’s calendar of events, Million Dollar Fish continues to grow with more prize-tagged fish released every year. Barramundi are tagged and secretly released right across the Territory in five main fishing regions: Darwin, Kakadu, Arnhem Land, Katherine and Tiwi. Since the competition launched, over 45 fishos from around Australia have reeled in tagged barramundi, and hundreds more have won epic prizes from our partners.

With more prize-tagged fish than ever before, Season 6 was the biggest yet. Running from 1 October 2020 – 31 March 2021, up for grabs was seven* Million Dollar Fish, 100 $10,000 barra and 20 Charity Fish worth $5,000 each (with $2,500 going to the fisho and the other half going to charity). Beneficiaries of Season 6 Charity Fish included Cancer Council NT, Star Ball through the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Shimano Junior Indigenous Guide Program through the Hayden & Reynolds Project. For the first time ever, we introduced the Double Tag Barra, worth $15,000 ($10,000 to you, and $5,000 for a mate who’s has a tough 2020). There were five released in Season 6 (one in each fishing region).

There are multiple ways to win big with Million Dollar Fish! If you reel in a verified tagged barra during Season 7, you could take home huge cash prizes of up to a million bucks.

Location & how to get there

Darwin International Airport (darwinairport.com.au) is serviced by many Domestic and Regional airline carriers including Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Air North.  Flights mainly operate out of Australia’s capital cities and generally take between 3 – 4 hours.

The airport is about a 15-minute drive from the centre of town.  Car hire is available from the counters close to the baggage carousels. There are also plenty of taxis available at the airport cab rank and private transfers can be pre-booked.

Darwin can also be reached by The Ghan, from Adelaide or Alice Springs, with trains arriving weekly on Tuesdays. While the rail station is situated a short drive from the city centre, free transfers are offered to all passengers.

For those driving there are a number of entry ways to access Darwin. Most roads are sealed however some are for the more adventurous 4 wheel drivers. If you are coming from Queensland the best route to take is the Overlander’s Way / Barkly Highway from Mt Isa. If you are leaving from Cairns you can take the Savannah Way which is a rugged, unsealed road which crosses the top of Australia from Cairns to Broome. You can also use the Savannah Way as an access from Western Australia. Other roads leading from WA to Darwin include the Tanami Road that runs across the Tanami Desert and to the north the Butine Highway. The drive from South Australia is especially scenic as you follow the Explorer’s Way through Coober Pedy and past the major centres of Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine before arriving in Darwin.
