Itinerary

Accommodation:

Situated just outside the centre of Alice Springs along the Todd River, the Crowne Plaza Alice Springs Lasseters is the perfect base for your stay in Australia’s Red Centre. The hotel is adjoined with Lasseter’s Casino which Priscilla fans will know as the central Australian destination for the film’s leading lads/ladies bus trip. You’ll find the luxurious large outdoor swimming pool the ultimate Alice Springs spot to soak up sunny afternoon rays with plenty of room for everyone to enjoy themselves. There is also an on-site fitness centre and lavish spa to relax in after your workout (if you can pull yourself away from exploring the spectacular Red Centre!).

Where to eat:

Lasseters’ complex has plenty of places to dine – from an iconic destination for a great grill meal at The Juicy Rump to Tempo, a new and exclusive wine and cocktail bar that also provides gourmet tapas and desserts. Casbah café and bar, located in the centre of the casino, offers a full bar, coffee, meals and light snacks alongside comfortable seating while Splash Poolside Café provides healthy protein smoothies as well as coffee, cocktails and beer for a poolside treat.

Tali, the Crowne jewel, is Lasseters’ premium restaurant boasting premium fine dining with an à la carte menu that features modern Australian and French flavours such as Sliced Spicy Pork Belly, Coffin Bay Oysters, Wagyu Scotch Fillet and Raspberrry and Custard Mille Feulle. The premier restaurant also features an extensive wine menu and theatrical open plan kitchen.

The Goat & Bucket house of hops provides a new dining experience in Alice Springs with a dark and moody interior that pairs well with a menu matched with craft beers from all around the world. Each dish is specifically crafted to accompany one of over 13 specialty beers including gourmet sausage, chicken wings, sliders and Goat & Guinness pie.

What to do:

Find yourself mesmerized by the spectacular outback scenery as you travel along the magnificent West MacDonnell Ranges, stopping at historic sites and prime photo opportunities along the way. Enjoy beautiful walks at Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm (for morning tea), the Ochre Pits, and the popular Ormiston Gorge for lunch. Next, you’ll find yourself at the wondrous Glen Helen Gorge, then, as you travel back to Alice Springs there will be time for an afternoon stop at Ellery Creek Big Hole. This waterhole is one of Central Australia’s most pristine, so don’t forget your swimmers when the weather’s warm for a refreshing afternoon dip!

As you continue your journey back to your hotel, the West MacDonnell Ranges will put on a show. As the sun sets the Ranges come alive with a spectacular array of sunburnt oranges and brilliant reds to end your day of adventure and exploration. Throughout the day you’ll also receive a morning tea, lunch and afternoon snacks to keep your hunger at bay.

At Alice Springs Desert Park you’ll find a range of options to fill your time with adventure and interesting experiences. At the Eagle Encounter you’ll find your heart racing as you get up close with Australia’s largest bird of prey, the majestic wedge-tailed eagle. Walk the Land will immerse you in the spirituality of the living desert as you admire local wildlife and learn hunting and gathering techniques, all while lead by an expert guide. You can also learn about the history of the traditional owners of the land, the Arrernte people, and their unique stories as well as the opportunity to experience an informative cinematic journey through millions of years of desert evolution.

A 30-minute Hot Air Balloon Flight will take you over approximately 15 kilometres of never-ending Australian outback to the south of Alice Springs, adjacent to the MacDonnell Ranges and over the historic Owen Springs Cattle Station. You’ll have a unique aerial perspective on one of the most beautiful landscapes in Australia that becomes a whole new world when viewed from the air.

Other recommendations:

Travel between the 5th and 14th of April and you’ll also have the opportunity to add on the experience of Parrtjima: A Festival of Light. This world-class light show is the only light festival of its kind, showcasing one of the oldest continuous Indigenous cultures on earth through the newest technology whilst celebrating the world-class beauty and culture of our country in the heart of Australia. The festival sees artworks from the Arrernte people, as well as pieces from across the Central Desert region and associated parts of the Northern Territory, illuminated in a variety of ways with both light installations and interactive artworks including a variety of ‘spaces’, each focusing on differing topics. It is a must-have experience in the heart of Australia.

Location & how to get there

Alice Springs Airport (alicespringsairport.com.au) is served by Virgin AustraliaQantas and Air North with capital cities served mostly by daily flights. There are also connections to and from Ayers Rock airport as well as several regional airports, mostly within the NT.

The airport is a 15 minute drive to the centre of town. An airport shuttle meets all flights and serves all central hotels. Car hire is available direct from the airport and there are plentiful taxis available at the airport rank. Private transfers, while available are limited, especially at peak times. Alice Springs can also be reached by The Ghan, from either Darwin or Adelaide. The train station is a short walk from the town centre and a shuttle service, as well as taxis serve all arrivals/departures.

Driving to Alice Springs is scenic from whichever direction you arrive, with the trip from Darwin or Adelaide being one of the most iconic road trips in Australia. Various turn offs along the Stuart Highway lead to points along the East Coast on (mostly) sealed roads. For the adventurous and those that seek true solitude the 1126km unsealed Great Central Road, which links Yalara to Laverton in Central Australia will give you an outback experience like no other.
