If you didn’t think it was possible for the Red Centre to become even more spectacular than it already is, think again! With Wintjiri Wiru in Uluru making its debut in May 2023 & Light-Towers in Kings Canyon having made its first appearance this month, there is no better time to visit the Red Centre. These new immersive light displays will certainly add to the already hugely successful Field of Light in Uluru and annual Parrtjima Festival held in Alice Springs.

WINTJIRI WIRU - ULURU

A new show is set to take over the night sky at Uluru from May 2023, via 1000 cutting edge drones and lasers telling the ancient Mala story of the local Anangu. Wintjiri Wiru, meaning ‘beautiful view out to the horizon’ in Pitjantjatjara language, will be an immersive journey through Anangu culture via an exclusively designed narrated light and sound display.

From your seat in the open air desert theatre, witness this artistic expression with ground breaking technology that offers you a life changing experience and connection to country. There are two Wintjiri Wiru options to choose from; one being a 2.5 hour experience beginning with sunset cocktails and canapes, followed by a gourmet hamper including native ingredients to enjoy while darkness falls and the powerful Anangu story begins. The second option is a 1.5 hour experience, arriving after sunset including light refreshments as you witness the compelling sound and light show.

LIGHT-TOWERS - KINGS CANYON

The new Light-Towers located within the Discovery Kings Canyon accommodation is the latest work of renowned international artist Bruce Munro. The new immersive light display is magnificent sight to behold. These towering structures are made up of multiple levels of platforms, each equipped with powerful floodlights that illuminate the canyon at night. The towers are strategically placed throughout the canyon, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

The sound and light installation has three ticketed sessions to choose from. The 30 minute Light-Towers by Night experience includes entry into the magical landscape that is Light-Towers, commencing at the scenic Luritja Lookout. The 1 hour Light-Towers at Sunrise will begin with an introduction to the display by a local guide before you wander through the colourful maze of light and sound and finish with a light refreshment. The premium Light-Towers at Sunset is 1.5 hours in duration, starting with native inspired canapés & drinks as the local guide speaks about the story of the installation before you view the display during the golden glow of dusk. Whether you're a nature lover or a fan of engineering marvels, Light-Towers is a marvel not to be missed. With it's impressive size & stunning illumination, it offers a truly unique and unforgettable experience for everyone visiting this beautiful part of the Red Centre.

FIELD OF LIGHT - ULURU

Yet another critically acclaimed light installation of internationally celebrated artist, Bruce Munro, and is aptly named Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku or, when translated in the local language of Pitjantjatjara, ‘looking at lots of beautiful lights’. Running indefinitely in Uluru, Field of Light covers the overwhelming size of more than seven football fields and includes over 50,000 spindles of light set on swaying stems creating a never-before-seen fantasy garden. Known for his immersive, site-specific installations that use light to evoke an emotional response in an often-outdoor environment, Munro’s Field of Light certainly doesn’t disappoint.

As the lights gently progress through a symphony of desert-inspired colours including traditional ochre, deep violet, bold blue and a gentle white, you experience the Australian outback and Uluru in, quite literally, a whole new light. This impressive light show mirrors the brilliant sky of stars that hang overhead, immersing you in a completely new world.

If you want to enhance your Field of Light experience, there are plenty of options for you to pick from. Upgrade to the Field of Light Star Pass for a prelude of drinks and outback canapes at an exclusive dune top as your host gives further insight into the installations. For the early birds, there is also the option to visit the installation in the morning and witness it in combination with a stunning Uluru sunrise tour.

PARRTJIMA - ALICE SPRINGS

Plus, if you happen to be in the Red Centre during April*, then don’t miss Parrtjima (pronounced par-chee-ma) – A Festival in Light, held annually in Alice Springs. It is fast gaining traction, being the only light festival of its kind, showcasing one of the oldest continuous Indigenous cultures on earth through the newest technology whilst celebrating the world-class beauty and culture of our country in the heart of Australia.

The festival sees artworks from the Arrernte people, as well as pieces from across the Central Desert region and associated parts of the Northern Territory, illuminated in a variety of ways. The pieces include works from notable arts centres including Ninuku Arts, Warnayaka Art, Ikuntji Artists, Barkly Regional Arts, Bachelor Institute of Tertiary Education and Keringke Arts.
