Itinerary

Accommodation:

Palms City Resort, winner of the Best Standard Accommodation in the NT for the last 5 years in the 2015 - 2019 Brolga Awards, provides a tropical paradise in the vibrant city of Darwin. Thanks to its 2015 refurbishment, the resort provides modern, comfortable rooms with a splash of tropical colour and airiness that oozes relaxation. Throughout the establishment the tropical ambience envelops its guests thanks to lush gardens, cute bungalows and light colours with wooden accents. It also has a 24-hour reception desk, breakfast café, luggage storage, WiFi and a newly renovated lagoon-style pool to relax in at the end of a day exploring the city.

Welcome to Knotts Crossing Resort, in the picturesque Katherine region of Australia's Northern Territory. Rooms are serviced daily, with fresh linen once a week, and there are two guest laundries. We also have a convenience kiosk and ATM on-site. The grasslands and rocky outcrops of the Territory’s northern savannah form the theme for the resort’s delightful Savannah Bar & Restaurant, serving delicious cooked, continental and buffet breakfasts every day. You can also enjoy al fresco dining at the licensed bar attached to the Savannah Bar & Restaurant near the main pool. The resort has two swimming pools and three outdoor barbecue areas.

What to do:

With the added benefit of car hire included you are free to explore Katherine at your leisure. The third largest town in the Northern Territory, Katherine, is your gateway to exploring, situated on the banks of the Katherine River which flows through to Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge. Katherine holds a rich history in indigenous art, World War II and the Overland Telegraph Line which are easily accessible throughout the town or its museums.  The majesty of Nitmiluk National Park, incorporating 13 beautiful gorges including the renowned Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge, needs to be seen to be believed. And there are a number of ways to explore this incredible bucket-list experience including on-foot, cruising, by air or canoeing!

Jump aboard for the best seats in the house on this 30 minute Katherine Gorge Helicopter Tour. This flight includes ALL 13 of the stunning sandstone Gorges within the Nitmiluk National Park. Departing from Katherine, you will not be disappointed as we cruise towards the Mouth of the Gorge keeping our eyes peeled for Outback NT wildlife as well as pointing out the Katherine Township and River.

Departing several times a day the NitNit Dreaming 2 gorge cruise is one of our most popular tours. A boat will take you to the end of the first gorge, where you will experience the beauty of the large boulders, rock pools and sands that make up the crossover to the second gorge. Along the way cultural guides will share their knowledge about plants, animals, dreamtime stories and culture. Surrounded by the limestone escarpment, the scenery is second to none. Immerse yourself in the cultural significance and geology of the park - discover historical facts, such as how the river has been named. This tour is a great insight into Nitmiluk, where you will learn from our passionate tour guides. There’s always something new to discover on every tour.

Location & how to get there

Darwin International Airport (darwinairport.com.au) is serviced by many Domestic and Regional airline carriers including QantasVirgin AustraliaJetstar and Air North.  Flights mainly operate out of Australia’s capital cities and generally take between 3 – 4 hours.

The airport is about a 15-minute drive from the centre of town. Car hire is available from the counters close to the baggage carousels. There are also plenty of taxis available at the airport cab rank and private transfers can be pre-booked.

Darwin can also be reached by The Ghan, from Adelaide or Alice Springs, with trains arriving weekly on Tuesdays. While the rail station is situated a short drive from the city centre, free transfers are offered to all passengers.

For those driving there are a number of entry ways to access Darwin. Most roads are sealed however some are for the more adventurous 4 wheel drivers. If you are coming from Queensland the best route to take is the Overlander’s Way / Barkly Highway from Mt Isa. If you are leaving from Cairns you can take the Savannah Way which is a rugged, unsealed road which crosses the top of Australia from Cairns to Broome. You can also use the Savannah Way as an access from Western Australia. Other roads leading from WA to Darwin include the Tanami Road that runs across the Tanami Desert and to the north the Butine Highway. The drive from South Australia is especially scenic as you follow the Explorer’s Way through Coober Pedy and past the major centres of Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine before arriving in Darwin.
